Prevention of Transmission of HIV among drug users in Nepal

Naya Goreto (NG) had started to work with UNODC from the date 19th November 2009 to 14th November 2012 to implement the project “Prevention of Transmission of HIV among the Drug Users in SAARC countries”. In the process of implementation of this particular project, NG has also established a Drop In Center (DIC) in Lalitpur to provide harm reduction services like Needle Syringe exchange programs, Condom distribution, Primary Health Care (PHC), Counseling and Referrals services to drug users and their families to prevent them and their families from HIV and other blood borne diseases. As a result NG successfully has reached 830 DU/IDUs and has been providing continuous services as per the need of the clients. And 1,050 Drug Users and their spouses got benefits through PHC Services 

 

During the project period, NG has not only conducted the Peer Education sessions to 364 Drug Users but also has conducted Behavior Change Communication (BCC) sessions to 336 Drug Users, sensitized 374 community members, oriented 350 community members on the need of Harm Reduction services for Drug Users and their spouses to prevent them from HIV and other blood borne diseases. Similarly, NG also has conducted advocacy program with stake holders, services providers, and GOs bodies to create an enabling environment for Harm Reduction at community level. At the same time NG conducted the family and spouses meetings to create a bridge between Drug Users and their families. In that particular meeting, all together 49 spouses and parents attended the meeting. To create the awareness among general population regarding health issues and easy accesses in health services, NG has conducted the Eight general health camp in different place at Lalitpur district through health camp. 947 community members have got benefits for free check up
